A step-by-step guide to rebuilding your knee — and your confidence in it.
After more than 15 years of helping people work through pain, injury, surgery, and setbacks, one thing has become clear: ACL recovery is not just about a healed graft. It’s about rebuilding the strength, mobility, control, power, and confidence your knee needs to get back to the life you want.
That’s why we created this guide. Inside, we’ll walk you through the same step-by-step process we use at EVO Health + Performance to help people recover from ACL injuries — after surgery, before surgery, or without surgery — and return to activity with less pain and a lower risk of re-injury.
Each step builds on the one before it. That means we’re not guessing, rushing, or progressing you because the calendar says so. We’re measuring what matters, addressing the right limitation at the right time, and making sure your knee is ready before moving forward.
Whether your goal is getting back on the field, returning to the gym, or simply trusting your knee on the stairs again, this guide will help you understand what a complete ACL recovery should look like.
As you work through it, reach out anytime with questions. We’re here to help.
This is the first step in your confident comeback.
ACL recovery can feel overwhelming because the timeline is long and progress is not a straight line. Some days your knee feels stable and strong. Other days it swells, aches, or just doesn’t feel like yours.
Think of recovery like building a skyscraper. You can’t skip the foundation and expect the top floors to hold. Your knee works the same way. Before you run, cut, jump, or compete again, it needs the right qualities built in the right order — and with ACL recovery, skipped steps are exactly what drive re-injury.
That’s what the 10-Step Recovery Process is designed to do. As you read through this guide, don’t think of each step as a random exercise or treatment.
"Think of each one as part of the structure."
When the right steps are built in the right order, recovery becomes clearer, stronger, and more predictable. Use this guide to understand where you are, what may be missing, and what needs to happen next.
Rebuilt in order, your knee comes back ready. Each step supports the next, and when the right qualities are built in the right order, your comeback becomes much more predictable.
Progress stalls when recovery is missing structure.
Most people are given treatment, exercises, or a date on a calendar, but not a clear process for building their knee back in the right order.
Usually, it comes down to three things.
If no one is measuring your motion, strength, and control, everyone is guessing — and with an ACL, guessing is how re-injuries happen.
Being six or nine months out doesn’t make a knee ready. Calendars don’t measure strength, control, or confidence. Tests do.
Exercises help, but only when they are part of a process with the right order, progression, and clear tests for when to move forward.
A structured process that finds what’s missing, builds the right qualities in the right order, and shows you when your knee is ready to move on.
That’s what the rest of this guide is built around.
The whole journey at a glance.

Ten steps doesn’t mean ten steps for you. Your assessment shows where you start. Your goal sets the finish line — walking comfortably is a different finish line than returning to a cutting sport. This process applies whether you’re recovering after ACL surgery, preparing for surgery, or managing an ACL injury without surgery.
Start at Step One, even if your injury or surgery is months behind you, to catch anything that got missed. Move on only when you’ve checked the boxes for the step you’re on. For each step you’ll see what’s holding you back, the goal, why it matters, what to work on, and how you’ll know you’re ready.
ACL recovery is measured in months, not weeks — a full return to sport typically takes nine months or more, because the graft needs that time to heal.
But the calendar is only half the story. You move forward when your knee passes each step’s checkpoints, not when a date arrives. Time plus tests — never time alone.

That’s the point of the process. You shouldn’t have to guess your way through recovery. If you’re not assessing, you’re guessing.
Pain is only one piece of the puzzle. Sometimes the missing piece is motion. Sometimes it’s strength, balance, power, endurance, or the confidence to plant, cut, and land without thinking about your knee.
